Barbara Grenell, President
Dr. Grenell is the founder and President of PHS. For the past 19 years, She has worked extensively in the area of strategic planning, business development and contracting, and she is a recognized expert in the healthcare field. Dr. Grenell’s clients range from pharmaceutical and device manufacturers to large academic medical centers and physician networks.
As president of PHS, Dr. Grenell has worked in every region of the country assisting clients with the development of contracting strategies and the design and implementation of strategic plans as well as business and marketing plans. She has worked with key decision-makers at major pharmaceutical and medical device firms on issues related to commercial and public sector reimbursement. Activities with the Biotech, Pharmaceutical, and Device companies have included development of reimbursement strategies for both public and private payers, development of pricing strategies, and analysis of federal and state regulations related to all payment issues. She has also helped with early launch work for new products to incorporate design features congruent to payer policies, and post launch activities including evaluation and resolution of regional reimbursement problems. Dr. Grenell has been actively involved in the tactical implementation of reimbursement strategies including but not limited to the training of marketing and customer service areas, the negotiations with public and private senior policy decision makers and competitive product portioning for pipeline products. On behalf of her provider clients, she has negotiated contracts with national and regional HMOs and has helped her clients to develop and implement the infrastructure necessary to support these contracts. Ms. Grenell also functions as an advisor and health care consultant to numerous corporations, venture capital firms, specialty societies and associations.
Prior to founding PHS, Dr. Grenell was the Director of PPO Development for Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield in New York, implementing regional programs for large employers such as General Motors and the City of New York; she was Senior Medical Research Consultant for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Virginia. She started her career in the nationally known Research Department at Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania.
She received her B.A. degree from Queens College, City University of New York and her Ph.D. degree in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University, New York, NY.
